The Next Internet Boom

The Internet bubble popped, companies solidified and reformulated and has given us what we have today. Several major players, a second tier of internet companies and so forth. A company such as Facebook owes its success not so much because of what it is, but because there is no other option. It is very similar to every other social networking site and its faithful following is due to Facebooks timing rather than a compelling user benefit. Other competitors to Facebook have commonly erred in their attempts to compete with facebook by creating social sites that are to specific to one market, the penalty in this is that although the site has a faithful following it effectively shuns the masses, where Facebook does not. Tv works the same way, networks will produce whatever gets the most viewers regardless of the level of lameness(Fox News, Dancing With the Stars.) This lowest common denominator approach is Facebooks animating principle. The Next Boom will result from sites that appeal to the masses yet have an essential element that fundamentally differentiates them from the major players, these sites will be comfortably similar yet at its core different. Internet constraints is the major challenge, which is why we haven't seen compelling competitors to Facebook, Google & Ebay. Which is precisely why these major players are so major, its because there is nothing else. 2011 will be the year of change on the net, and oh yeah buy real estate in Chicago.
